US President Donald Trump is eager to hold a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as possible. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed this in an interview on Sunday (May 18).
Rubio said, “President Trump wants this meeting to happen quickly. To resolve the ongoing conflict, a direct discussion between Trump and Putin might be the only way.”
An official invitation has been sent to Putin from Washington, but the exact date and location for the meeting have not been finalized yet. Rubio added, “Organizing a meeting like this requires some time and preparation.”
This initiative follows peace talks held last Friday in Istanbul between Russia and Ukraine, along with mediation efforts by the Vatican. Rubio mentioned that Moscow has shown interest in considering this proposal under certain conditions.
Referring to recent talks with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Rubio said, “The Istanbul meeting was not a waste of time.” He added that two major breakthroughs occurred during these talks — an agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners and a proposal from Russia for a ceasefire.

However, Rubio also warned, “If talks continue without any realistic proposals, the US might have to consider other options.”
In the same interview, Rubio addressed Iran’s nuclear program, making it clear, “Iran will never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.” He explained that any ability to enrich uranium could quickly turn into material for weapons. Still, President Trump prefers a peaceful solution, stating, “The President wants Iran to become a prosperous and peaceful nation where people have a better future.”
