Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin's promise of a 30-hour Easter truce, attacks in Ukraine haven't stopped. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia is only pretending to keep peace while continuing its military actions.
Putin had ordered all military operations to stop from Saturday evening to midnight on Sunday. Ukraine agreed to the truce and even suggested extending it for 30 days. But Zelensky says Russia is still attacking certain areas.
Zelensky stated, "They want to create the illusion of peace, but continue their aggression in some places." He added that Ukrainian forces are responding strongly wherever needed.
Foreign Minister Sybiha also expressed doubt, saying, “Putin promises 30 hours instead of 30 days. We've heard this before. We trust actions, not words.”
Putin made the truce announcement in a meeting, saying it was based on “humanitarian reasons.” But he also warned his troops to be ready for any provocations.
A UK Foreign Office spokesperson responded: “If Putin truly wants peace, he must stop this invasion completely—not just for Easter.”
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, hundreds of thousands have died or been injured. The US has tried to help end the war, but talks haven’t gone far.
Last month, Russia rejected a full ceasefire proposed by the US and Ukraine. US officials now say they may stop peace efforts unless there’s quick progress.
