On May 17, 2025, Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton was arrested in Marion County, West Virginia, on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs. The 57-year-old was released the same day after posting a $1,500 personal recognizance bond.
Retton gained national acclaim during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she became the first American woman to win the all-around gold medal in gymnastics. She also secured two silver and two bronze medals at the same Games. Her performance, achieved despite a knee injury requiring surgery just weeks prior, earned her widespread recognition and the title of Sports Illustrated's "Sportswoman of the Year."
In October 2023, Retton faced a severe health crisis when she was hospitalized with a rare form of pneumonia that left her unable to breathe independently. Her daughter, McKenna Kelley, initiated a crowdfunding campaign that raised over $450,000 to cover medical expenses, as Retton was uninsured at the time. Following her recovery, Retton disclosed that she continues to experience lung scarring and requires daily oxygen support.
As of now, Retton has not publicly commented on the DUI charge.
