Massive Chemical Plant Explosion in Seville Triggers Regional Alert Across Southern Spain

On May 14, 2025, a significant explosion occurred at a chemical plant in Alcalá de Guadaíra, approximately 16 kilometers east of Seville, Spain. The blast sent a massive plume of thick black smoke into the sky, prompting authorities to issue a regional health alert and advise residents to stay indoors.

The explosion took place at the Plainsur facility, a company specializing in the packaging and distribution of chemical products. The plant occupies an 11,000-square-meter area within the La Red industrial estate. While the specific chemicals involved have not been disclosed, Plainsur's inventory includes highly flammable substances such as ethylene, toluene, and industrial solvents.

Emergency services responded promptly, evacuating the facility and nearby warehouses. Two individuals sustained injuries: a plant worker suffered minor burns, and a firefighter experienced illness due to smoke inhalation. Authorities utilized the Es-Alert system to send emergency notifications to approximately 25,000 residents within a three-kilometer radius, advising them to close windows, remain indoors, and wear face masks if necessary.

By evening, firefighters had begun to control the blaze, but due to the fire's magnitude and the nature of the chemicals involved, complete extinguishment was not expected until the following day. The regional government of Andalusia activated a Level 1 emergency response, mobilizing firefighting units from multiple towns, including Utrera, Arahal, La Rinconada, Mairena del Alcor, and Sanlúcar la Mayor.

This incident marks the second chemical plant fire in Spain within a week. On May 10, a fire at a chemical factory in northeastern Spain led to health warnings and stay-at-home orders for 150,000 residents across five towns. Additionally, Spain has recently faced infrastructure challenges, including a nationwide power outage on April 28 and significant train disruptions due to copper cable theft.
