President Trump to Speak at West Point Amid DEI Policy Changes

President Donald Trump is set to deliver the commencement address at the United States Military Academy at West Point on May 24, 2025. This marks his second appearance at the academy, following his 2020 address during the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming speech occurs amid significant policy shifts in military education under his administration.

Overhaul of DEI Programs at Military Academies

Since returning to office, President Trump has initiated a comprehensive rollback of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives across federal institutions, including military academies. At West Point, this has led to the disbandment of several student organizations, such as the Society of Women Engineers, the Latin Cultural Club, and groups supporting LGBTQ+ cadets. Additionally, educational materials related to systemic racism and gender studies have been removed from the curriculum. These actions align with executive orders aimed at eliminating what the administration describes as "woke" ideologies from military training.

Leadership Changes and Policy Enforcement

The appointment of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense has further reinforced these policy changes. Under his leadership, senior military officials who supported DEI programs have been dismissed. The administration has also implemented artificial intelligence tools to monitor and censor academic content, ensuring compliance with the new directives.

"Golden Dome" Missile Defense Initiative

In conjunction with these educational reforms, President Trump has unveiled plans for a $540 billion missile defense system named the "Golden Dome." This initiative aims to protect the United States from both terrestrial and space-based threats. Initial funding has been secured through a comprehensive tax-and-spending bill recently passed by House Republicans.

Public Response and Anticipated Protests

The policy changes have sparked criticism from educators and former military personnel. Notably, Graham Parsons, a philosophy professor at West Point, resigned in protest, citing concerns over academic freedom and the suppression of critical discourse. Protests are expected during the commencement ceremony, including demonstrations near the campus and on the adjacent Hudson River.

Commemoration of the U.S. Army's 250th Anniversary

Following the commencement, President Trump plans to participate in a large-scale military parade in Washington, D.C., celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. Scheduled for June 14, the event coincides with his 79th birthday and is intended to honor military service members and showcase the nation's defense capabilities.
