The Incident

On the morning of May 22, 2025, a Cessna 550 Citation II aircraft, owned by Dave Shapiro through his company Daviation LLC, crashed into a residential area in the Tierrasanta neighborhood of San Diego. The crash occurred around 3:45 a.m., tragically killing all six individuals aboard, including Shapiro and Williams. The aircraft had departed from New Jersey, made a fuel stop in Kansas, and was en route to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego when the accident occurred.

  • Dave Shapiro: At 42 years old, Shapiro was a co-founder of Sound Talent Group, a prominent talent agency representing major rock acts such as Pierce The Veil, Parkway Drive, and Sum 41. He was also a licensed pilot and owned a flight school, Velocity Aviation, in San Diego and Homer, Alaska. His contributions to the music industry were widely recognized, and tributes have poured in from artists and colleagues alike.

  • Daniel Williams: Williams, known for his dynamic drumming with The Devil Wears Prada, had transitioned from music to technology, recently taking a position as a software engineer at Apple after nearly a decade at GoPro. Shortly before the crash, he shared images from the cockpit on Instagram, expressing excitement about the flight.

Investigation and Aftermath

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are conducting investigations into the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft encountered heavy fog and technical difficulties during its approach to the airport. The crash resulted in significant damage to several homes and vehicles, leading to the evacuation of approximately 100 residents. Fortunately, no fatalities occurred on the ground.
